A Child in School Is Not Enough: What Does It Take to Keep Them Learning?
Education2 min read

Imagine a child sitting in a classroom, attending school every day, but slowly falling behind.
They may not understand what is being taught. They may be too afraid to ask for help. At home, there may be financial pressures, responsibilities or simply no one who can help them with their studies.
After a while, the child stops raising their hand. Then they stop trying. And sometimes, they stop coming to school altogether.
This is why getting a child into school is only the beginning. The real challenge is helping them stay, learn and believe that they can move forward.
When a child starts falling behind
Learning gaps do not always begin with a child leaving school. Sometimes, they begin much earlier—when a child misses a few lessons, struggles to understand a subject or moves to the next grade without having understood the basics.
Without the right support, that gap can grow.
For a child already facing challenges at home, falling behind can make school feel difficult, frustrating and eventually irrelevant. What looks like poor attendance or lack of interest may actually be a child struggling without the support they need.
What does a child need to keep learning?
Sometimes, it starts with something simple: someone noticing.
A child needs additional support when they are struggling. They need encouragement when they lose confidence. They need learning spaces where they can ask questions without feeling embarrassed.
They also need families and communities that understand the importance of education and support them in continuing it.
This means addressing education not just through classrooms, but by looking at the circumstances around the child.
Where can grassroots organisations make a difference?
Working closely with communities allows grassroots organisations to see these challenges up close.
At Nand Care Foundation (NCF), our education work focuses on children from Adivasi communities and coal-mining families, where challenges such as learning gaps, limited academic support and difficult family circumstances can affect a child's educational journey.
Our efforts focus on providing learning and remedial support, encouraging children to stay connected with education, understanding the challenges that can lead to disengagement, and working with families and communities to support children's learning.
Because sometimes, what a child needs is not another reminder to study.
They need support, encouragement and someone who believes they can do better.
Education is about more than attendance
Every child deserves more than a place in a classroom.
They deserve the opportunity to understand what they learn, ask questions, build confidence and see possibilities for their future.
A child being in school is a beginning.
Helping that child stay, learn and move forward—that is where meaningful change begins.
