Kiran: We Just Wanted Her to Keep Going to School
Story shared bySakshi Brahma
There was a time when Kiran was finding it difficult to go to school regularly. She came from a very poor family, where even managing everyday expenses was a challenge. With three younger siblings at home, there was a lot for her family to worry about. Buying books, notebooks and pencils was not always possible. Slowly, Kiran started missing classes, and before long, she was drifting away from the education she deserved.
Sometimes, when we see a child missing school, we forget to ask why. Kiran's story reminded us how much a child's circumstances can affect something as simple as going to class.
When we came across her through Nand Care Foundation's Project Shiksha, we knew she needed more than encouragement alone. She needed someone to understand her situation and help her through it. We spoke to her, spent time counselling her and encouraged her not to give up on her studies. We provided her with books, notebooks and stationery, along with food support, so that she could start attending school again.
It was not about changing her life overnight. It was about making things a little easier, helping her return to class and reminding her that her education mattered. We wanted her to know that the difficulties at home did not mean she had to give up on learning.
Today, Kiran is 22 years old, married and working as an ASHA worker. When we look at her journey, we think about the girl who once struggled to attend school because her family could not afford the things she needed. Today, she has grown into a young woman who serves people in her community.
Her journey makes us happy for a simple reason: she got the chance to continue her education. The circumstances she grew up in were not easy, but her story did not end with the difficulties she faced as a child.
At Nand Care Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the chance to study, regardless of their family's financial situation. Sometimes, a little support at the right time can help a child stay in school and keep moving forward.
People often say that when you educate a woman, you educate an entire household. Kiran's story reminds us why this matters. Education is something she carries with her as she moves through life, and today, she is using her time and effort to serve others in her community.
We met Kiran when staying in school was becoming difficult for her. We are grateful that, through Project Shiksha, we could support her along the way. Today, when we think of Kiran, we don't just remember the child who needed help. We see a young woman who continued her journey, and that is something worth celebrating.
